Chronicle — Privacy Policy

Chronicle is a journal app. You write notes, and you define what kinds of thing the journal keeps track of. This page explains what happens to what you write.

The short version

Chronicle works entirely without an account. If you never sign in, nothing you write leaves your device except through Android's own backup (see below).
There is no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no profiling. Nothing you write is read, mined or shared.
If you sign in, your journals are copied to Google Cloud Firestore so you can read them on another device. Only you can read that copy.
You can delete the cloud copy and your account from inside the app at any time.

What is stored on your device

Everything you write — journals, the data model you define, codex entries, notes and chapters — is stored in a database on the device, and only there, unless you sign in.

Android's own Auto Backup may include that database in the backup Android makes to your Google account, and restore it when you reinstall the app. That backup is operated by Google, not by Chronicle: it is encrypted, Chronicle cannot read it, and you can switch it off in your device settings under Backup.

What is stored in the cloud, if you sign in

Signing in is optional. When you do:

What is sent: the contents of your journals — their model, codex entries, notes, chapters and the dates they changed.
What identifies you: the Firebase user id created for your Google account, plus the email address and display name that Google returns when you sign in.
Where it is kept: Google Cloud Firestore, in Google's European multi-region (eur3).
Who can read it: only you. The database rules allow each signed-in user access to their own data and to nothing else.

Google acts as the hosting provider (data processor) for this storage. Chronicle sends your data to no one else. There are no other third-party services in the app.

Purchases

Chronicle offers one optional in-app purchase, which lifts the one-journal limit of the free app. The transaction is handled entirely by Google Play. Chronicle never sees a payment method, a card number or a billing address — it asks Google Play whether this account has bought the unlock, and stores nothing but that yes or no on the device.

Why

The only purpose of the cloud copy is to give your journals back to you: on a second device, or on a new phone after losing this one. It is not used for anything else.

How long it is kept

Until you delete it. There is no expiry and no archival copy beyond Google Cloud's own short operational backups.

Deleting your data

On the device: delete a journal in the app, or uninstall it.
In the cloud: open the account sheet and choose Delete my cloud data. This erases everything the account has stored on the servers and deletes the account itself. The journals on your device are left alone.

Your rights

If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, the GDPR gives you the right to access, correct, export and erase your personal data, and to object to its processing. In practice the app gives you all of this directly: what is stored is what you can see, and the deletion described above is immediate and complete. For anything else, use the contact address below.

Children

Chronicle is not directed at children and collects nothing knowingly from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and the previous versions remain in the app's public source history.
